Amazon EVS lets enterprises migrate VMware workloads to AWS without re-architecting them. I created the console UI text, 28 help panels, and deployment documentation as one unified Day 1 experience, shipping on schedule through private preview, public preview, and general availability. The challenge

EVS deployment is networking-heavy: BGP routing through VPC Route Server, VLAN subnet allocation across more than ten network types, and dependencies on VPC, IPAM, Service Quotas, and Route 53, all coordinated with VMware components. Many users are VMware administrators who are experienced with VMware infrastructure but new to AWS networking, so the Day 1 experience had to bridge both mental models while keeping a complex setup on track.

Public preview testing surfaced a specific, high-impact friction point. The DNS hostname inputs were free-form with no console-side validation, so customers entered invalid hostnames, or full FQDNs where only a hostname was expected. Those failures surfaced late in provisioning, forcing customers to restart after they had already completed much of the workflow.

Designing the Day 1 experience

The response was to move guidance into the workflow. Instead of relying on customers to discover prerequisites in separate documentation or recover from late provisioning failures, the experience needed to surface requirements when they mattered, explain AWS networking concepts in VMware terms, and connect each console step to deeper documentation.

I developed the console UI text, 28-panel help system, and deployment documentation in parallel. I led weekly UI-text workshops with product managers, UX designers, and console developers and gave feedback through Figma reviews, so the content and design shaped each other.

The console work covered the six-step environment-creation wizard: step instructions, field labels and descriptions, validation and error messaging, and status and confirmation flows. The help panels ran from a main environments overview down to field-level help for the hardest inputs, including VPC Route Server, VLAN subnets, DNS hostnames, and VMware licensing. The VPC Route Server panel, for example, explained BGP routing and peer ASN configuration in terms a VMware admin new to AWS could act on.

Fixing the DNS validation friction

When public preview feedback pointed to DNS validation as a major friction point, I worked with product, UX, and engineering on a coordinated fix across the console and documentation.

In the console, I added content that helped customers understand the DNS requirements before provisioning began: introductory guidance, field-level instructional text, validation messaging, an info callout clarifying that the field expected a hostname rather than a full FQDN, and a confirmation checkpoint acknowledging that the hostname inputs matched the customer’s DNS records. I also created contextual help panels covering DNS configuration and the validation checkpoint.

In the documentation, I expanded the DNS configuration requirements, added DHCP options set setup guidance, and surfaced DNS requirements earlier in the deployment prerequisites checklist. Product leadership had flagged this as high priority in weekly reviews, and handling the console and docs together let the fixes land without separate review cycles for each surface.

Outcomes

The console, help panels, and documentation shipped on schedule through private preview, public preview, and general availability. The 28 help panels passed UX design review on the first submission, validating the workshop-based approach to developing UI text with design and engineering.

The DNS fix addressed the failure path that surfaced in preview by moving critical guidance earlier in the workflow, clarifying hostname requirements in the console, and matching that guidance in the deployment documentation.
